British people and hoodies.?

I was researching England because I'm thinking of visiting (I'm American) and I want to learn and understand the culture before I just show up in someone else's country. I came across some articles about these people called "chavs". What I learned is that they're basically illiterate, thieving, s***heads who refuse to work or do anything even remotely productive, so I get why nobody can stand them. But another thing I noticed is that alot of people over there don't like hoodies. So I was wondering, is it the article of clothing itself, or just what it might represent since most chavs wear them? I'm not trying sound ignorant or be rude. I was just curious.
