What does the lantern symbolize in Hawthorne's The Scarlet Letter?

The lantern can potentially expose Dimmesdale's affair with Hester. In the same scene (ch. 12), it puts Rev. Wilson in a positive light, giving him a heavenly glow (see "radiant halo" in that paragraph).
