How can you tell the difference between whooping cough and bronchitis?

For about a year now, on and off i will get a smokers cough (i dont smoke but am around smokers). It will last about a month and then go away for a couple months and come back. Now i've had it for about a month and last week my doc says my xrays are clear....but right after i got em done i started coughing up green mucous and since yesterday i have had coughing fits so bad i will throw up. it happened twice yesterday and twice last night when i was sleeping. i would cough for about 10 minutes and during those 10 minutes i'd cough, loose my breath, and throw up just over and over repeating for about 10 minutes. i'll cough throughout the day and then had coughing fits. my mom says sounds like bronchitis but whooping cough and bronchitis sound like the same symptoms. im 25 and dont smoke but sounds like i do. and im worried cuz i have 3 kids and one is only a couple months old. my doctor seems like an idiot and i dont know what else to do. i dont have the ''whooping'' sound when i cough but when i had the coughing fits, i did when i would gasp for air, but wasnt sure if its the whooping sound or me just gasping for air cuz im throwing up while coughing.
