Familiar Hypercholesterolemia, statins and falling pregnant with high cholesterol. Please help.?

Hi all, I have lived with hereditary high cholesterol my whole life. I have been on statins (Lipitor and Crestor) for all of my adult life and always been cautious. My husband and I would like to fall pregnant but have heard horror stories of birth defects and the cholesterol lowering statins. I have spoken to three doctors and each suggest a different length of period to stop statins before conception - ranging from one month to six months! This makes a huge impact, has anyone else gone through this? I can't find any concrete time period. Thanks very much.
